The leadership of Urum community in Awka North Local Government Area of Anambra State has dispelled rumours circulating about the alleged existence of a “kidnappers’ den” in the area. In an official statement released on Thursday, the community described the claims as false, malicious, and an attempt to create unnecessary panic and tarnish the reputation of the peaceful community.

The statement, signed by Hon. Sir Felix Godwin Oranye, President-General of the Urum Development Union, and HRH Igwe Benedict Ofozoba Nweke, the traditional ruler of Urum, reassured residents and visitors of their safety. According to the release, thorough investigations conducted by both security agencies and community leaders found no evidence to support the claims of any such criminal activity in the area.

“This rumour is a deliberate attempt by mischief-makers to tarnish the image of our peaceful community. It is nothing more than a baseless fabrication and the handiwork of political propaganda aimed at destabilizing the peace in our community,” the statement read.

The leadership urged the public to disregard the falsehood and continue their lawful activities without fear. They emphasized that Urum remains a safe, peaceful, and welcoming community committed to the security and well-being of its residents and visitors.

Furthermore, the community called on individuals to verify information before sharing it, warning that anyone caught spreading unverified or false rumors would be reported to the appropriate authorities for legal action.

In a move to reassure residents and visitors, the statement provided contact information for key security and community leaders. Residents with security concerns are encouraged to reach out to the Chief Security Officer of the Urum Vigilante Group, Mr. Onyenwe Godwin Arinze, at 09130373567, or the President-General of the Urum Development Union, Hon. Sir Felix Godwin Oranye, at 08034423517.

The statement concluded by reiterating the community’s commitment to peace and security while urging residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the appropriate authorities.

Urum leadership expressed confidence in the collaborative efforts of community vigilantes and law enforcement agencies to maintain the security of the area, emphasizing their unwavering dedication to the safety of all residents and visitors.
