On Friday in Awka, I joined fellow Local Government TC Chairmen, community representatives, and key partners for an important meeting convened by the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) and The World Bank. This gathering focused on mitigating the recurring challenges of annual flooding in our communities in Anambra State.
The discussion centered on evaluating the devastating impacts of previous floods, including the tragic loss of lives, property damage, and displacement experienced by residents. We reviewed the heartbreaking reality of six lives lost and over a hundred properties destroyed during the last flood incident.
However, this meeting wasn’t just about reflecting on the past. We actively engaged in forward-thinking discussions aimed at preventing similar tragedies in the future. Collaborative efforts with NEMA, SEMA, and our valued partner, The World Bank, are crucial in achieving this goal.
Through open dialogue and a shared commitment, we explored potential solutions and strategies to enhance preparedness and response mechanisms for future flooding events. By working together, we can mitigate risks, protect lives and livelihoods, and build more resilient communities.
I am confident that the valuable insights and actionable plans generated from this meeting will pave the way for a more proactive approach to flood management. I remain committed to collaborating with all stakeholders to ensure the safety and well-being of our people in the face of these annual challenges.
Ndibeanyi,
It is morning yet and we will do the most in the discharge of our responsibility
