In the pursuit of a transformative vision for Anambra State, Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo, CFR, has been instrumental in implementing a series of critical reforms within the judicial system.

Among Governor Soludo’s recent initiatives, the establishment of the Anambra Bureau of Missing Persons stands out as a pioneering leap forward. This trailblazing bureau, the first of its kind in Nigeria, was officially established through an Executive Order signed by the Governor and subsequently gazetted as No. 6, Vol. 33 on the 10th of August, 2023.
Situated within the ambit of the Ministry of Justice, with Prof (Mrs) Sylva Chika Ifemeje, as Commissioner for Justice and Attorney General of Anambra State, the primary function of the Bureau is to systematically receive, document, and act upon reports regarding individuals who are missing, disappeared, or unaccounted for within the borders of Anambra State.
Already making substantial progress, the Bureau has conducted its inaugural meeting and set its operations in motion. Additionally, it has forged a collaborative partnership with the International Commission on Missing Persons (ICMP), a treaty-based international organization headquartered in The Hague, the Netherlands.
Thus the establishment of the Anambra Bureau of Missing Persons marks a crucial stride towards ensuring the safety and security of Anambra’s residents. By maintaining a comprehensive database of missing or disappeared individuals, the Bureau not only pays tribute to their memories but also lays the foundation for robust investigative measures.
This database serves as a reservoir of invaluable information, facilitating the identification and apprehension of those responsible for these distressing incidents. Of course, the significance of this initiative will go beyond its immediate scope. It will dovetail seamlessly into Governor Soludo’s overarching objective of expediting and enhancing the delivery of justice in the state.
Through the diligent efforts of the Bureau, cases of missing persons are addressed promptly and effectively, ensuring that the rule of law prevails, and that the rights and safety of Anambra’s citizens are safeguarded.
