Residents and commuters around the Igbariam axis of Anambra State have expressed deep appreciation to Governor Chukwuma Soludo for his massive road and infrastructural developments across the state. They acknowledge his efforts in transforming Anambra’s road network, making transportation easier and boosting economic activities.
However, amidst this progress, they are raising urgent concerns about the safety of pedestrians along the ever-busy expressway near Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University (COOU), Igbariam Campus. According to the residents, the high influx of students and other road users crossing the expressway daily has led to frequent accidents, some of which have resulted in loss of lives.
Speaking on behalf of the community, a local leader lamented the dangers posed by the absence of a pedestrian bridge or flyover. “We are grateful for the development happening under Governor Soludo’s leadership, but this express road has become a death trap. The speed at which vehicles move here is alarming, and our students, traders, and residents are at great risk every day. We need a pedestrian bridge or a flyover to ensure safety,” he stated.
Eyewitnesses recount multiple tragic incidents where unsuspecting pedestrians, mostly students of COOU, were hit while attempting to cross the road. Drivers, on their part, also complain about the difficulty in controlling speed on such a fast-moving expressway, further increasing the risk of accidents.
The call for a pedestrian bridge or flyover has gained momentum, with concerned citizens urging the state government to prioritize the project. Many believe that such an infrastructure will not only prevent accidents but enhance mobility in the area.
As Governor Soludo continues his developmental strides, the people of Igbariam and its environs are hopeful that their appeal will be heard, ensuring a safer and more efficient road network for all.
