The member representing Anambra East and West Federal Constituency at the Green Chambers, Chief Peter MacPee Aniekwe, has condemned the violent communal clash between Umuoba Anam and Aguleri communities in the Omambala region.

In a statement signed by his spokesperson, Odikpo Mmadubueze, Chief Aniekwe expressed deep concern over the renewed violence, which has reportedly resulted in loss of lives and property. He described the situation as “troubling and deeply embarrassing,” urging youths from both communities to lay down their arms and embrace peace.

The lawmaker revealed that he had briefed the Speaker of the Federal House of Representatives on the disturbing development, emphasizing the need for urgent intervention.

“Something urgent must be done. What is happening in Omambala is unacceptable. Every time war, every time war — it’s shameful. No responsible leader would endorse such violence,” Aniekwe lamented.

He highlighted the adverse effects of the recurrent clashes, including stunted economic growth and social disintegration. Recalling previous conflicts involving Nsugbe and Umueri, Omor and Anaku, and the protracted Ogbaru crisis, Chief Aniekwe called for an end to the cycle of violence.

Acknowledging the peace efforts of traditional rulers in the Anambra North District, the legislator commended their dedication to fostering reconciliation. He assured constituents that strategic measures were being explored to restore lasting peace and stability.

Aniekwe appealed to community stakeholders to take responsibility for guiding the youth and promoting peaceful coexistence. “Please, I sincerely plead with our youth to give peace a chance so that development can come in,” he urged.

Reports indicate that the clash was sparked by a disagreement during a fishing expedition, escalating into a fierce conflict between the two communities. Anonymous eyewitnesses confirmed casualties and significant damage to property.

As tensions remain high, stakeholders and residents are hopeful that peace efforts will soon yield positive results, bringing harmony to the troubled region.
