Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi has called on the federal government to provide meaningful recognition for Miss Nafisa Abdullah Aminu, the 17-year-old Nigerian student who emerged as the top English language performer at the 2025 TeenEagle Global Finals in London.
The exceptional student from Yobe State outperformed over 20,000 participants from 69 countries to clinch the global title, a feat that Obi described as “not only a personal triumph but a moment of great national pride.”
In a statement released on Thursday, Obi warmly congratulated the teenager and emphasized the need for government recognition of her achievement and that of other academically successful Nigerian students.
“Nafisa’s brilliance, nurtured through discipline, family support, and quality education at Nigerian Tulip International College, has proven once again that Nigerian youths can excel on the world stage when given the opportunity,” Obi stated.
The former Anambra State governor stressed that such remarkable achievements demand government attention, calling for concrete steps to honour outstanding students who bring academic glory to the nation.
“This remarkable feat calls for meaningful recognition. I strongly urge the Federal Government to honour Nafisa and all other students who recently brought academic honour to the country,” Obi said. “A fully funded scholarship would not only reward her excellence but also inspire other students across the country to pursue education with passion and purpose.”
Obi’s call extends beyond individual recognition to a broader national commitment to educational excellence. He emphasized that acknowledging academic achievers should be a cornerstone of national policy.
“Education remains the most powerful investment we can make in the future of our country. Let us, as a nation, demonstrate that academic excellence is a national value,” he declared.
The former presidential candidate specifically recommended that the government formally receive both Nafisa and her teacher at the presidency, viewing such recognition as symbolic of the nation’s commitment to education.
“I encourage the government to formally receive Nafisa and her teacher at the presidency as a symbol of our collective commitment to education,” Obi stated. “Recognising and supporting achievers like her is how we build a nation where merit is honoured and greatness is nurtured.”
Nafisa’s victory at the TeenEagle Global Finals represents a significant achievement for Nigerian education on the international stage. Her success story highlights the potential of Nigerian students when provided with quality educational opportunities and support systems.
The call by Obi aligns with growing advocacy for increased government investment in education and recognition of academic excellence as a means of inspiring more students to pursue educational achievement.
As Nigeria continues to grapple with various educational challenges, success stories like Nafisa’s serve as beacons of hope, demonstrating the country’s educational potential and the need for sustained investment in the sector.
The federal government has yet to respond to Obi’s call for formal recognition of the young champion and her academic achievement.
