In a heartfelt tribute, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has described the passing of former National Electoral Commission (NEC) Chairman, Professor Humphrey Nwosu, as a profound loss to Nigeria. The commendation came during the professor’s funeral service held in his ancestral home in Ajali, Orumba North Local Government Area of Anambra State.

Representing President Tinubu, Minister for Works, Senator Dave Umahi urged Nigerians to reflect upon Professor Nwosu’s significant contributions to the country’s democratic process. He called for a united effort among citizens to harness the benefits of democracy and honour Nwosu’s legacy.

Anambra State Governor, Professor Chukwuma Soludo, who addressed the gathering, noted Professor Nwosu’s crucial role as a peacemaker.

He urged residents of the state to prioritize efforts that foster lasting peace within their communities.

Governor Soludo also highlighted the necessity of posthumously honoring Professor Nwosu, recognizing his achievement in conducting what has been described as Nigeria’s freest and most transparent elections.

During the service, Nnaemeka Nwosu, the late professor’s first son, expressed gratitude toward the federal government for the opportunity given to his father to serve as the Chairman of NEC during a pivotal time in Nigeria’s electoral history in 1993. He described his father, Professor Nwosu, as a man committed to peace and service.

In a poignant sermon, the Right Reverend Samuel Ezeofor, Anglican Bishop of Aguata Diocese, urged the congregation to serve God diligently, noting the inevitability of death. He reflected on the ephemeral nature of life, reminding attendees that Professor Nwosu exemplified a life of humanitarian service, having distinguished himself as a Knight.

The funeral service witnessed an outpouring of condolences from various dignitaries, including the Governor of Abia, Dr Alex Otti and former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Chief Emeka Ihedioha, along with other prominent figures, all gathered to pay their respects to a man whose legacy will continue to resonate in Nigeria’s democratic journey.
