Former Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Prof. Kingsley Moghalu has called on political leaders to offer service to the people, not just to themselves.
Moghalu said that although colonialism and the transatlantic slave trade had a negative impact on Africa because both dehumanized the African mind, making it feel inferior, he did not believe both phenomena were enough excuse for the continent’s poverty and underdevelopment.
“We just have not decided to make real progress, on our own terms, the way Asia has, despite its own colonial experience and humiliations such as China’s loss of the Opium Wars and having to cede Hong Kong to Britain,” he said.
“Indeed, those humiliations anchored the worldview that has powered the rise of China.”
Moghalu who is the Chief Executive Officer, Sogato Strategies said, “We can think and act with discipline in similar directions in Africa. We will achieve transformation and development if we do. That means, first, that political leadership must be service to the people rather than to the leaders themselves.”
