The recent makeover of the three iconic flyovers in Awka, the capital of Anambra State, sparked curiosity and speculation among residents and opposition politicians. The flyovers, which were previously adorned with the yellow and black colours of Anambra State, are now being repainted with white and black colours.
According to Osy Onuko, the Managing Director of Awka Capital Territory Development Agency (ACTDA), the reason for the change is to enhance the ambience of the city. Onuko explained that the yellow and black colours were no longer suitable for public spaces because they faded quickly, whereas white and black colours are more uplifting and in line with global best practices.
Onuko also addressed concerns that the makeover was an attempt to obliterate the legacy of the former governor, stating that the decision was made to adapt to changing circumstances and improve the environment. He emphasized that some of the artworks and motifs on the flyovers would be retained, including portraits of prominent individuals like Nnamdi Azikiwe.
The development is part of the Anambra State government’s efforts to transform Awka into a modern city. As reported earlier, the state government has also commenced the construction of interlocking roads in Awka, with the aim of improving the city’s infrastructure and aesthetics. Additionally, the government has begun building a pedestrian bridge in Awka, which is expected to enhance safety and reduce traffic congestion.
