In alignment with Governor Charles Soludo’s People-Oriented Governance Agenda and his commitment to expanding access to clean water across Anambra State, the Mayor of Idemili South Local Government Area, Hon. Mrs. Amaka Obi (Iyom Ife-Abata), has commissioned a solar-powered borehole project at the Civic Centre in Oba.
The project, which is powered by renewable energy for sustainability and uninterrupted service, was undertaken by the Idemili South Local Government under the leadership of Hon. Obi. At the commissioning ceremony, she was joined by the Deputy Mayor, Hon. Ifeanyi Anakuba; the Majority Leader, Hon. Prince Gozie Okafor; as well as councillors, party executives, and community stakeholders.
Speaking at the event, Hon. Obi stressed the importance of clean water access, describing it as a basic human right that must be prioritized. She noted that the borehole is not just an infrastructure project but a deliberate step towards improving health outcomes and easing the burden on families who previously relied on less reliable sources of water.
This intervention is one in a string of achievements that have marked Hon. Obi’s tenure. Since assuming office, she has consistently demonstrated a commitment to grassroots development through a series of impactful projects. Under her watch, the local government secretariat in Ojoto has undergone significant renovation, providing a more conducive environment for staff and improving service delivery to the public. In addition, solar-powered streetlights have been installed in strategic parts of the LGA, particularly in Oba, Alor, and Nnokwa, enhancing nighttime visibility and safety.
Transitioning from infrastructure to healthcare, Hon. Obi’s administration has also taken bold steps to support primary health centres in the area. These include the provision of beds, renovation of clinics, and supply of basic medical equipment, with recent beneficiaries located in Ojoto and Oba. In the area of economic empowerment, she has facilitated vocational training for women and youths and supported several with startup kits to encourage self-reliance and small-scale enterprise.
At the Oba event, her efforts did not go unnoticed. The State Assistant Treasurer of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Hon. Uche Maduekwe (Igwe), praised her for her foresight and people-first approach, describing her as “a progressive-minded Mayor who truly understands the pulse of her people.” Similarly, the President General of Oba community, Engr. Uzo Ejiofor, commended the initiative, stating that the borehole represents a significant stride toward enhancing the community’s living standards.
The commissioning ceremony drew wide attendance and enthusiastic support from various segments of the community, including stakeholders, councillors, women and youth leaders, and residents. The atmosphere reflected not only appreciation but renewed hope in the possibilities that focused local governance can deliver.
Hon. Amaka Obi continues to set a pace for inclusive and responsive leadership, proving that meaningful development can begin at the grassroots when there is vision, commitment, and accountability.
