The Mayor of Anambra West Local Government Council, Hon. Fidelis Nnazor (Apollo Jnr) has announced the appointment of Hon. Mrs Maureen Obianuju Nwakasi, the Secretary to the Council to serve the newly inaugurated local government administration.
Hon. (Mrs) Nwakasi has since been sworn into office.
Prior to her appointment, Mrs Maureen Nwakasi actively served All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) in the last decade in various capacities in her Umuenwelum Anam Ward and is popularly regarded in her role as the immediate past women Leader of APGA, Anambra West LG Chapter.
While commenting on the appointment, an expert in administration and development stated that Nwakasi’s appointment by the Chairman, suggests an affirmation by both the party and executive leadership at the Council towards inclusive role for women in governance.
The expert stated: “By the action of the Chairman, Anambra West Council has now achieved a remarkable feat as the only or one of the few local government councils currently in the state with both a female Deputy Chairman and a female Council Secretary.
“The appointment which has generated delightful interest amongst party faithful and the local government in general, shows the commitment of the council leadership towards advancing the policy of Governor Soludo’s administration on inclusive governance and administration in Anambra State.
“It is on record that the governor’s administration has witnessed appointment of women into key positions in both the state executive council where women hold key ministerial positions and in the academic sector.”
Meanwhile, Mrs Nwakasi, a loyal and dedicated party member, is expected to bring her wealth of experience and dedication to duty, to support the local government administration in fulfilment of its plans and the State in general. The New Secretary hails from Umuenwelum Anam by marriage, and holds a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc) Degree in Banking and Finance from the Rivers State University of Science and Technology (RSUST), Port Harcourt.
In addition to her political experience and social development activities at the grassroot level, the newly appointed secretary is the founder of Riverine Women Advancement and Resources Development (RiWARD), a registered charity which focuses on better life and well-being for rural women.
In her appreciation message, Hon. (Mrs) Nwakasi stated: “With all sense of humility and loyalty, I wish to appreciate and thank the Chairman of Anambra West Local Government Council, Hon Fidelis Nnazor, the Deputy Chairman Hon. Mrs Nkeiruka Ndive, the Leader/Speaker of the Legislative Council Hon Kelvin Anagor Okonkwo, the entire Legislative Council of Anambra West Local Government, the APGA party leadership at the LG Chapter as well as all leaders, stakeholders and members across all the wards for my appointment to serve the new administration of Anambra West Local Government Council (AWLG) as the Secretary.
