The judgment of the election matter between Chief Chinedu Obidigwe and Chief Peter Macpee Aniekwe is expected to be delivered in August.
Ahead of the judgment, there are mixed feelings and apprehension among Anambra East/West Federal Constituency voters who went to the polls to make their choice on February 25, 2023.
Aniekwe was declared the elected representative of the Constituency at the lower chamber of the National Assembly, usually known as the House of Representatives. However, Obidigwe not feeling satisfied with the outcome, went to the Election Tribunal to challenge Aniekwe’s victory. Meanwhile, Aniekwe has since commenced his legislative duties as he was sworn-in along with other members of the National Assembly on May 29.
At the closing of trial and adoption of final written addresses by the parties, Obidigwe’s supporters were said to have celebrated their chances of up-turning the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) verdict. But Macpee’s supporters say there is no cause for alarm as they remain optimistic, believing strongly that Macpee had clear victory at the polls and nothing would change it.
Before the election, some supporters of Obidigwe were alleged to have boasted that even if Macpee wins at the poll, the victory will be upturned at the court. In their opinion, “Macpee had plethora of issues that may be raised against him in the court”.
