Renowned legal luminary, Prof. Mike Ozekhome, SAN, has described former Plateau State Governor and retired Air Commodore, Senator Jonah David Jang, as “a movement, not just a man,” in celebration of his 81st birthday.
Speaking on Jang’s legacy, Ozekhome emphasized that the elder statesman’s life has been defined by service, resilience, and an unwavering commitment to justice.
Born on March 13, 1944, in Du, Plateau State, Jang’s journey from the Nigerian Air Force, where he trained in West Germany, the Nigerian Defence Academy, and the United States, to his tenure as Military Governor of Benue and Gongola States, showcased his leadership abilities.
As the two-term civilian Governor of Plateau State (2007–2015), Jang spearheaded infrastructural development, security reforms, and economic transformation despite facing opposition and challenges. In 2015, he transitioned to the Senate, where he continued advocating for the people of Plateau North.
His leadership, however, was tested when he was accused of corruption—a charge he battled legally until his eventual discharge and acquittal in 2022. Ozekhome, who led Jang’s defense, maintained that the allegations were politically motivated.
“Jang’s story is one of destiny, determination, and divine orchestration,” Ozekhome stated. “His persecution was an attempt to tarnish his reputation, but the truth prevailed.”
As Jang turns 81, he remains a revered figure in Nigerian politics, a symbol of resilience, and a leader whose impact continues to inspire. The people of Plateau State and beyond celebrate not just his birthday, but a lifetime dedicated to service and justice.
