A group, Concerned Anambra State Indigenes in Diaspora (CAID) has called on the Anambra State governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo to urgently conduct local government election, in line with his election promises, to ensure that the local government executive led by the chairman are accountable to the people as their electors.
According to the group, a situation where the executive members of the local government were appointed instead of being elected is against democratic principles which Governor Soludo promised to strictly follow.
At the moment, the local government executive were appointed by the governor and approved by the state assembly; a situation, they said is not acceptable. Their reason is that the executive could be removed according to the whims and caprices of the one who appointed them.
They argue that if the local government executive members were elected by their people, they will be able to specifically face the challenges that are peculiar to their environment and locality.
Meanwhile, an insider told Multichannels247, an online newspaper, that the state and local government authorities operate joint account, whereby the local government must tender all their proposed projects to the state government who may approve or disapprove such projects.
Explaining the implication, the insider said the LGA chairman cannot take decisions unless they risk being removed.
