Governor Charles Soludo on Monday reinforced his administration’s commitment to sustainable urban development during a strategic visit to Oba community in Idemili South Local Government Area, where he engaged directly with estate landlords, youth leaders and residents on critical development issues.
The governor, accompanied by Deputy Governor Dr Onyekachukwu Ibezim, used the occasion to address the rapid transformation of Oba into what he described as an emerging megacity hosting 42 estates.
“I believe Oba youth are responsible. I see progressive minds here, and we can build a new city that will become a proud destination,” Soludo told the gathering. “This vision informed our decision to site the biggest drug market in West Africa here in Oba — a project currently under construction.”
Central to the governor’s message was the importance of adhering to comprehensive master plans in estate development. He warned that proper documentation of structures is essential to prevent future encroachments and regulatory challenges.
“Developing an estate means building infrastructure,” Soludo stated. “We will engage directly with estate owners and any developer unwilling to construct access roads and other basic infrastructure risks having their land allocation revoked.”
The governor stressed that private estate developers must prioritise infrastructure development—including roads, drainage systems, and basic amenities—before selling plots of land – rather than shifting these responsibilities entirely to government. He explained that whilst the government provides general road networks, housing cooperatives are expected to develop housing estates guided by master plans that include provisions for schools and other essential infrastructure.
Turning his attention to the youth, Governor Soludo issued strong warnings against involvement in get-rich-quick schemes, specifically cautioning that the so-called “Oke-ite ritual” represents a complete scam based on false and superstitious beliefs.
“Anyone who does not work should not eat. Therefore, go and work,” the governor declared. “I will be holding further discussions with the youth to initiate empowerment programmes. I commend the effective leadership structure among the youth of Oba.”
The governor expressed particular concern over the rising number of Igbo youths imprisoned across various countries due to involvement in illicit activities, often inspired by misleading media narratives. He faulted certain filmmakers for promoting wealth acquisition through ritual practices in their storylines, instead highlighting reputable Igbo entrepreneurs such as Obi Cubana and Cosmas Maduka as exemplary role models who achieved success through integrity and diligence.
“We must begin to educate our children on the fundamentals of wealth creation,” he said. “Let us return to our core values and encourage our youth to embrace hard work instead of indulging in ill-fated pursuits such as drug trafficking, cybercrime (yahoo yahoo), and kidnapping. We must rise collectively to say no to evil.”
Responding to community concerns raised during the visit, Governor Soludo assured residents that urgent infrastructure needs would be addressed promptly. He specifically promised that a needed transformer would be provided and that road projects would follow.
The governor also instituted a committee to strengthen collaboration with community stakeholders, including traditional rulers and youth leaders, as part of his administration’s broader agenda to build a sustainable and prosperous Oba city.
The high-profile visit included participation from key state officials such as Secretary to the State Government, Prof Solo Chukwulobelu,l; Chief of Staff, Ernest Ezeajughi; Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Don Onyenji and Chairman of the Post Primary Schools Service Commission, Prof. Nkechi Ikediugwu.
Community leaders present included President-General, Engr. Uzo Ejiofor; the Igwe of Oba, Engr (Sir) Augustine Emelobe; Mayor of Idemili South Local Government, Mrs Amaka Obi and Chief Ikenna Iyiegbu, along with APGA party members, youth leaders and market women.
The governor’s visit represents part of ongoing efforts to ensure sustainable development across Anambra State communities while addressing youth unemployment and social challenges through direct engagement and empowerment initiatives.
