Anambra State governor, Professor Chukwuma Charles Soludo, CFR, has expressed deep sorrow over the death of Nigerian football legend and former Super Eagles captain, Mr. Christian Chukwu, who passed away on Saturday, April 12, 2025.

Governor Soludo described the late Chukwu as a towering figure in Nigerian football whose name is eternally etched in the annals of the nation’s sporting history.
“Christian Chukwu was more than just a footballer,” the governor said. “He was a symbol of excellence, dedication, and patriotism. His contributions to Nigerian football are immeasurable, most notably leading the Green Eagles to victory in the 1980 African Cup of Nations (AFCON).”
Soludo recalled Chukwu’s exploits as a fearless defender and inspirational captain, both for the national team and the famed Enugu Rangers International Football Club, where he earned the revered nickname “Chairman” for his commanding presence and leadership on the pitch.
“His leadership and skill ignited a passion for the beautiful game across the country and inspired generations of footballers. As coach of the Super Eagles, he continued to serve the nation with wisdom and tactical brilliance, nurturing talent and fostering unity within the team,” the governor added.
Governor Soludo extended his condolences to the Chukwu family, the Nigerian football community, and the entire nation, praying for the peaceful repose of the football icon’s soul.
“May his legacy continue to inspire greatness in sports and beyond,” the governor said.
