Anambra State Governor Professor Chukwuma Charles Soludo has paid tribute to Dame (Dr) Virgy Etiaba, Nigeria’s first female state governor, as she celebrates her 83rd birthday.
In a statement issued on Monday, Governor Soludo praised Dame Etiaba’s historic tenure and enduring contribution to women’s leadership in Nigerian politics.
“Dame Etiaba’s remarkable stint as the former first female governor of Anambra State has not only paved the way for women in leadership but has also left an unforgettable mark on the socio-political landscape of the state,” Governor Soludo said.
He added that her achievements demonstrated that “leadership knows no gender”, highlighting her dedication, vision and resilience in breaking barriers.
Dame Etiaba made history in 2006 when she became acting governor of Anambra State, serving for nearly three months during a constitutional crisis. Her appointment marked a watershed moment for women’s representation in Nigerian governance.
Governor Soludo further commended Dame Etiaba’s work beyond her time in office, noting her sustained commitment to education, healthcare and women’s empowerment across the state.
“Beyond her historic tenure, Dame Etiaba’s relentless commitment to the advancement of education, healthcare and women’s empowerment in Anambra has had a profound impact on the lives of countless families,” he stated.
The governor, who holds the national honour of Commander of the Federal Republic (CFR), extended warm wishes to Dame Etiaba, who holds the honour of Commander of the Order of the Niger (CON).
“We warmly celebrate Dame (Dr) Virgy Etiaba on this occasion of her birthday, commending the wisdom and grace she continues to embody,” Governor Soludo said, wishing her “good health, happiness and more fulfilling years ahead”.
