The All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) is set to hold its governorship primaries today in Awka, Anambra State, with Professor Charles Chukwuma Soludo emerging as the sole aspirant for the party’s ticket.
In accordance with Section 84(7) of the Nigerian Electoral Act 2022, the party is organizing a special congress to affirm Soludo’s candidacy since he is the only contender. The law provides that where only one aspirant is vying for a position within a political party, a special convention must be held to confirm and officially adopt the candidate before forwarding his name to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Soludo, the incumbent governor of Anambra State, is not only coasting through the primaries unopposed but is also widely considered to be without any serious opposition ahead of the main election. His growing popularity and rising acceptance across the state are largely due to his sterling performances in office since assuming leadership. Among his notable achievements are the massive road infrastructure development projects spread across the 21 local government areas of the state, the ongoing transformation of the education and health sectors through reforms and strategic investments, and the empowerment of youths and artisans via targeted skill acquisition and entrepreneurship support programs. His administration has also been commended for its transparent governance style, prudent financial management, and the revitalization of the local security architecture, which has helped to address emerging security concerns. Another key achievement under his watch is the promotion of local industry and innovation, including the establishment of industrial hubs such as the Awka Leatherworks Initiative, which has further boosted the local economy and encouraged indigenous enterprise.
Delegates from all 21 local government areas of the state are present at the venue of the special congress, which is already underway in the state capital. Also present are several dignitaries, including the Deputy Governor of Anambra State, as party faithful await the arrival of Governor Soludo himself. The event is being monitored by numerous election observers, while security agents are stationed across the area to ensure a peaceful and credible exercise.
As events unfold, it is clear that today’s exercise is more than a formality. It represents a strong vote of confidence in Governor Soludo’s leadership, with the party and the people seemingly unified in their desire to see him return for a second term. With little or no formidable opposition in sight and a performance record that speaks volumes, Soludo appears firmly on track to extend his tenure as Anambra State governor.
