International businessman and newly inducted stalwart of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Chief David Edochie Onuorah, has called on the Federal Government and relevant authorities to dredge the River Niger, construct dams, and implement other necessary flood control measures to address the annual devastation in Anambra West Local Government Area and other riverine communities.
Chief Onuorah made the call a few days ago while officially joining APGA, citing the outstanding performance and leadership of Anambra State Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, as his motivation for aligning with the party. Speaking on the urgent need for flood mitigation, he decried the continuous destruction of homes, farmlands, and livelihoods, which have left many residents in distress year after year.
“It is unacceptable that our people continue to suffer the same fate every rainy season. Communities like Mmiata, Nzam, Umuenwelum, and Umuikwu face severe economic and social setbacks due to unchecked flooding,” Onuorah stated. “Countries around the world have successfully tackled similar challenges in areas with even lower elevation than these communities. It is time the government took decisive action.”
The APGA stalwart stressed that beyond temporary relief efforts during flooding seasons, long-term solutions must be prioritized. He urged the federal and Anambra State governments, as well as international development partners, to address the root causes of the floods and ensure that affected communities receive the necessary infrastructural interventions.
Chief Onuorah also commended the Federal Government and elected representatives of the area for their ongoing efforts toward the construction of the Otuocha-Ibaji-Kogi-Abuja federal road. He described the project as a crucial economic corridor that would enhance trade, improve accessibility, and drive development in Anambra West and neighboring states. However, he urged authorities to ensure its timely completion, stressing that delays could hinder the anticipated benefits.
“The Otuocha-Ibaji-Kogi-Abuja road is a lifeline for our people. It will boost commerce, attract investment, and make life easier for those who have suffered neglect for too long,” he said. “I encourage all stakeholders to see the project through to completion.”
Chief Onuorah’s entry into APGA is seen as a boost to the party, especially in Anambra West, where he is expected to play a key role in mobilizing support. His alignment with Governor Soludo’s administration underscores the growing recognition of APGA’s developmental strides in the state.
As the rainy season approaches, affected communities remain hopeful that increased advocacy from stakeholders like Chief Onuorah will push the government to take meaningful steps toward a lasting solution to the flood menace.
