Otuocha, February 4, 2025 — Following the deadly communal conflict between Umuoji, Umuoba Anam, and Egbeagu, Aguleri, a ₦2 million reward has been announced for anyone with credible information leading to the arrest of those responsible for the killings.
The announcement was made by Chief TonyCollins Nwabunwanne, Commissioner for Local Government, Chieftaincy, and Community Affairs, in agreement with all stakeholders present at a high-profile meeting held at the Anambra East Local Government headquarters in Otuocha. Chief Nwabunwanne, who spoke on behalf of the Anambra East and West Local Government Areas, assured that the identities of informants would be kept confidential.
“We, in agreement with all the stakeholders here today, are offering a ₦2 million reward for anyone with useful information on the killers responsible for the tragic incidents during the conflict,” Nwabunwanne stated. “This is a critical step in ensuring justice, and I assure you that your identity will remain protected.”
The meeting, presided over by former Deputy Governor of Anambra State, Dr. Chinedu Emeka, condemned the violence and mandated law enforcement agencies to identify, arrest, and prosecute those involved. The gathering resolved to treat disputes over land and fish ponds separately from criminal acts such as killings.
To foster peace and reconciliation, a committee was formed comprising five representatives each from the warring communities, neutral members from other parts of Aguleri and Anam, the Divisional Police Officers of Anambra East and West LGAs, and the Presidents General of Umuoba Anam and Egbeagu communities.
Traditional rulers present included HRM Igwe Ben Ekwealor of Umuoba Anam, HRH Law Nwofia of Eziagulu-Otu, His Highness Igwe Joseph Ajodu of Ukwalla, and His Highness Igwe Pius Omachony of Olumbanasa. They pledged their support for the resolutions and peace efforts.
The Presidents General of the affected communities were tasked with retrieving all arms and ammunition from criminal elements. Efforts to document the number of lives lost during the conflict were also initiated.
Chief TonyCollins Nwabunwanne emphasized the importance of public cooperation in bringing the perpetrators to justice. “We cannot achieve peace without justice. We need everyone’s support. If you have any information, please come forward without fear. This reward is to show our seriousness and commitment to peace,” he added.
The meeting concluded with a renewed determination to restore peace, security, and stability in the affected communities, marking a significant step toward justice and reconciliation.
