Akpabio-Natasha Clash: Saraki Calls for Transparent Investigation to Protect Senate’s Integrity

Former Senate President, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki, has called for a transparent and unbiased investigation into the ongoing dispute between Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan of Kogi Central. Saraki emphasized that the integrity, sanctity, and public perception of the Senate should be protected above individual interests.

In a statement titled “Let’s Protect the Institution, Not Individuals,” Saraki expressed sadness over the controversy, warning that it could erode public trust in the legislature. He urged all stakeholders—both within and outside the Senate—to ensure that their actions do not tarnish the institution’s reputation.

“The Constitution, laws of the country, Senate rules, and parliamentary conventions must be followed in resolving the issue,” Saraki stated. “The resolution should be transparent and aimed at uncovering the truth, rather than shielding any party.”

Call for Ethics Committee Investigation

Saraki advocated for an open investigation by the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Public Petitions, arguing that both parties should submit to the process and present their claims before the committee. He cited a precedent from his tenure as Senate President when he personally appeared before the committee over allegations of importing an official vehicle without paying customs duties.

“The claim against me was false, and I knew it. That was why I submitted myself to the committee in full view of the media. The transparent handling of the investigation proved that the allegation was baseless,” Saraki recalled. “The 10th Senate should follow this precedent.”

He stressed that the Senate must not be perceived as condoning sexual harassment, gender bias, abuse of office, or disregard for parliamentary order. According to him, a fair and open investigation would ensure that any wrongdoing is corrected and appropriate remedies are provided.

Protecting the Senate’s Sanctity

Saraki clarified that his statement was not intended to declare either Akpabio or Akpoti-Uduaghan guilty or innocent. Instead, he underscored the need for due process to maintain the credibility of the legislature.

“For me, the institution of the Senate is sacred and must be protected. All lovers of democracy should work to strengthen it. No leader or member should be allowed to undermine its sanctity,” he concluded.

The controversy between Akpabio and Akpoti-Uduaghan has sparked heated debates within and outside the Senate, raising concerns about the leadership and decorum of the upper legislative chamber. Saraki’s call for transparency adds to growing demands for an impartial resolution to the dispute.
