Anambra State Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo has expressed deep sorrow over the murder of Somtochukwu Christelle Maduagwu, a 29-year-old news anchor with ARISE TV, who was killed during an armed robbery at her Katampe residence in Abuja on Monday, September 29, 2025.
In a statement released Tuesday by his Press Secretary, Christian Aburime, Governor Soludo described the late journalist as “a shining star whose light has been prematurely extinguished.”
“At just 29 years old, she had already distinguished herself as a lawyer-turned News Anchor, Reporter, and Producer with ARISE News Channel, where her vibrant voice and professional excellence connected with audiences across Nigeria and beyond,” the statement read.
The Governor expressed particular anguish over the circumstances of Maduagwu’s death, stating that she was “cut down in the prime of her youth and career by criminal elements.”
“This is not only a personal tragedy to her family but a loss to Anambra State, the journalism profession, and indeed our entire nation,” Soludo said. “That such a promising young woman, who worked diligently to inform and educate the public, should meet such a violent and senseless end is deeply disturbing and unacceptable.”
Maduagwu, fondly called “Sommie” by colleagues and friends, was a lawyer by training who transitioned into journalism. The Governor noted that she “exemplified the industrious and excellence-driven spirit for which Anambra indigenes are renowned.”
The attack occurred in the early hours of Monday at her residence in the Katampe area of the Federal Capital Territory.
Governor Soludo has called for immediate action from law enforcement authorities. “On behalf of the Government and the entire people of Anambra State, I call on the Nigeria Police Force to conduct a thorough, swift, and transparent investigation into this heinous crime and ensure that the perpetrators are apprehended and brought to justice expeditiously,” he said.
The Governor extended condolences to Maduagwu’s parents, siblings, extended family, friends, and colleagues at ARISE News Channel.
“May her gentle soul rest in perfect peace, and may God grant her family and loved ones the fortitude to bear this irreplaceable loss,” the statement concluded.
