The governor of Anambra State, Professor Chukwuma Charles Soludo, CFR, has extended warm felicitations to a distinguished son of Anambra and African football icon, Emmanuel Anthony Oguejiofo Okala, on the joyous occasion of his 74th birthday, celebrated on Saturday, May 17, 2025.
In his birthday message, Governor Soludo hailed Okala as a symbol of sporting excellence whose legacy continues to inspire generations. He fondly recalled that the legendary goalkeeper, born in the ancient city of Onitsha, rose to national and continental fame with his outstanding performances as Nigeria’s first-choice goalkeeper between 1972 and 1980.
Okala’s contributions to Nigerian football, including being named Nigerian Footballer of the Year in 1978 and playing a pivotal role in the nation’s historic 1980 African Cup of Nations victory, remain defining moments in the country’s sports history.
Governor Soludo noted that Anambra State is blessed with heroes across all fields, and Emmanuel Okala stands tall among them—both figuratively and literally—as a beacon of dedication, discipline, and national pride. The governor celebrated him as a true legend whose name is etched in gold in the annals of Nigerian football.
On behalf of the government and people of Anambra State, Governor Soludo congratulated Mr. Okala on reaching this remarkable milestone and offered prayers for his continued good health, long life, and enduring fulfilment.
The statement was signed on May 17 by Mr
Christian Aburime, the Press Secretary to the Governor.
