Anambra State Accounting Staff Association elects new executive during celebration of International Accounting Day ….Onyekwe, Onwugbufo, others emerge

The Anambra State Accounting Staff Association (ASASA) has elected new executive body to pilot the affairs of the association in the next three years.

Messrs. Onyekwe Albert Ude and Francis Tobechukwu Onwugbufo emerged as chairman and vice chairman respectively. Other executive members are Chidozie Nwosu, Secretary; Lucy Okonkwo, Assistant Secretary; Veronica Ifeaghachi, Financial Secretary and Uju Mbaebie as the Treasurer.

They also include: Francis Osakwe, Publicity Secretary; Uzoamaka Oguocha, Social/Welfare Officer; Chiagozie Mbonu and Chibuzo Uyammadu as Provost I and Provost II respectively.

The association jubilated as the new executive members took oath of office which was administered by Sir Chika Dennis Muomaife, the Director of Final Accounts Office of the Accountant General.


In his acceptance speech, the new Chairman, Mr. Onyekwe appreciated members for reposing confidence in him and others; and promised not to fail them. He solicited for the support of the members to enable them to carry out the onerous task of leading the entire accountants in the State Civil Service.

The election took place during the celebration of International Accounting Day on Wednesday, November 6 at the Jerome Udoji Secretariat, Awka.

Earlier before the election, the celebration kicked off with a workshop tagged: “Methods of Coding/Codification of MDAs in line with IPSAS and National Chart of Accounts (NCoA)”.

The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Finance, Mr. Achor Joachin Chinedum who is also the Chairman of ASASA gave a lecture on “Coding”.

He said that “Coding” was the process of assigning numerical codes to represent data, ideas or instructions in a format that could be easily understood and processed by computers or humans.

He highlighted the importance of International Public Sector Accounting Standard (IPSAS), explaining that it was a body responsible for setting up of the standards of operation for public sector entities.

According to Mr. Achor, “Chart of Accounts is a systematic listing of accounts used to classify and record financial transactions.”

Continuing, he said, “The Federal Government adopted the International Public Sector Accounting Standard; developed a common Chart of Accounts for all the three tiers of government viz: Federal, State and Local Government Areas.

“Codes are designed to properly define the components and in coding the accounts, it enables efficient financial management and reporting”.

The association also earmarked a thanksgiving mass to hold on Sunday, November 10 at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church, Ifite Awka by 10am to mark the end of the 2024 International Accounting Day Celebration.

Meanwhile, Anambra State Accounting Staff Association, (ASASA) is a body of professionals in the accounting field in the Anambra State Civil Service.
