Anambra State, the political and economic heart of the Southeast, has long been synonymous with the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA). Since its emergence as a dominant force in 2006, APGA has entrenched itself not just as a political party but as a movement tied to the cultural and emotional identity of Ndi Anambra. Despite the growing intensity of Nigeria’s political competition, it is increasingly clear that no political party is poised to dislodge APGA’s hold on the state, thanks to several compelling factors.

At the forefront of APGA’s sustained dominance is the transformative leadership of Governor Charles Chukwuma Soludo. A globally respected economist and former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Soludo has brought his wealth of expertise to bear on governance in Anambra State. His administration has focused on tangible developmental strides that resonate with the electorate. From massive investments in infrastructure, such as road construction and rural electrification, to policies aimed at empowering local businesses and industries, Soludo’s tenure has been marked by an emphasis on progress and innovation.

Security, long a thorny issue in the Southeast, is also receiving serious attention under Soludo. At the heart of this effort is the “Udo Ga Achi” initiative—translated as “Peace Shall Reign”—a comprehensive strategy aimed at tackling insecurity from its roots. Upon assuming office, Governor Soludo inherited a state grappling with rising cases of kidnappings, cult violence, and activities of separatist agitators. Rather than adopting reactive measures, he introduced a proactive approach that has gradually transformed Anambra into one of the safest states in the region.

The “Udo Ga Achi” initiative which will be officially launched before the end of the month is anchored on a multi-pronged approach that includes deploying technology-driven solutions, strengthening community policing, and fostering socio-economic development. Surveillance systems, including drones and CCTV cameras, now monitor key locations, while rapid response squads equipped with modern tools ensure swift action against criminal elements. Local vigilante groups to be formalized and equipped to work in tandem with security agencies, creating a grassroots network of first responders who understand their communities deeply.

Before now, Soludo’s administration also focused on addressing the root causes of insecurity. Through economic empowerment programs, skill acquisition initiatives, and job creation efforts, the government has offered youths alternatives to crime, fostering hope and stability. Dialogue and engagement with stakeholders such as traditional rulers, religious leaders, and youth organizations have further contributed to peacebuilding. The “Udo Ga Achi” campaign is more than a security plan—it is a vision for a harmonious society where safety and development go hand in hand.

Beyond governance, APGA’s connection to the Igbo people’s identity continues to give it an unparalleled advantage in Anambra politics. The party’s roots, tied to the legacy of the late Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu, a revered Igbo leader, have made APGA more than just a political entity. For many, it represents the spirit of Igbo pride and resilience in a nation where regional identity often shapes political choices. Supporting APGA is seen as a way of safeguarding this legacy, ensuring that Igbo interests are protected within Nigeria’s larger political framework.

In contrast, opposition parties in the state are in disarray, further solidifying APGA’s dominance. The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is plagued by internal crises, factional disputes, and a lack of clear leadership. The All Progressives Congress (APC), though strong at the federal level, remains weak in Anambra, struggling to gain significant traction due to its perceived disconnect from the aspirations of the people. Meanwhile, the Labour Party, which enjoyed a surge of momentum during the 2023 general elections, has since lost its steam. The party’s inability to sustain the enthusiasm generated during Peter Obi’s presidential campaign has left it with little organizational structure or influence in the state.

APGA’s strategic political posture further consolidates its position. Unlike these opposition parties, APGA has demonstrated its ability to balance regional pride with national relevance. The party has maintained a pragmatic approach, aligning with credible national parties when necessary to ensure Anambra continues to benefit from federal resources while keeping control of state and local government affairs firmly within its grasp.

Another key element of APGA’s dominance is its grassroots organization. Over the years, the party has built a formidable network of loyal supporters at every level, from the wards to the local governments. This robust structure enables it to mobilize voters effectively and maintain a strong presence in all parts of the state. While opposition parties may have financial resources or federal backing, they often lack the organic connection to the electorate that APGA has cultivated over decades.

As Anambra moves forward under the leadership of Governor Soludo, it is evident that APGA’s grip on the state remains firm. The party’s combination of developmental achievements, emotional resonance, strategic political alignment, and the disarray of opposition parties makes it a force that is difficult to challenge. With initiatives like “Udo Ga Achi” ensuring peace and security, APGA has not only provided effective governance but also fostered an environment where growth and stability thrive.

For now, the people of Anambra appear content with APGA’s leadership, and the party’s adaptability ensures it will remain a dominant force in the state’s political landscape for the foreseeable future. Until an opposition emerges with a compelling alternative that matches both the emotional and practical appeal of APGA, the party’s reign in Anambra is set to continue unchallenged.
